You are correct that there are definite advantages of hitch cargo carriers over roof cargo carriers. You will have less drag improving your gas mileage and you won't have to reach up to the roof of your vehicle each time you load or unload. There are quite a few differences between boxes and baskets. A Roof mounted cargo box is going to keep your items out of the elements whereas a basket would need an additional cargo bag to keep your items from the weather.

This won't impact their capacity but will make a difference in how well they'll hold up to wear and tear.
